The first days of spring are here, and this is the wine to drink. Cherry and clay pot, strawberry and pomegranate, an array of wild flowers and spices. The 2017 Rosso from Lamoresca is easy to love
The tiny Lamoresca estate, located in the southernmost corner of the province of Catania, was built from the ground up when Filippo Rizzo wanted to get back to Sicily after spending some time slingling natural wine in Belgium. While getting the farm up and running Filippo spent multiple vintages making wine with friend, and fellow natural producer, Frank Cornelissen up on the volcanic Mt. Etna.
The Rosso ‘17 is a blend of Nero d’Avola and Frappato from 40 year old vines, vinified naturally without temperature control or sulfites. The wine shines alongside a simple pasta dish. Maybe something bright or spicy, the wine with a slight chill on it. Puttanesca and Amatriciana come to mind, or any pasta that’s topped with toasted garlicky breadcrumbs. Classic pomodoro sauce would work great as well. I think I’m hungry.

*Named after the Moresca Olive, which the farm has 46 very ancient olive trees of.
